Vive Angled Metal Grab Bar: a 45-degree handhold for tight spots

A straight bar is not always the right shape for the spot where a hand naturally reaches. Corners beside a tub, a narrow wall next to a toilet, a short stretch of tile between a vanity and a door: these places often suit something with a bend in it. The Vive Angled Metal Grab Bar has just joined our bathroom shelf, and this post covers what Vive itself says about it.

What it is and who it suits

This is a stainless steel handhold shaped like a shallow V. Two equal straight sections meet at a 45-degree angle, so one end sits higher than the other once it is on the wall. Vive says the angle gives a steadier, more natural grip while a person stands, sits or shifts from one position to the other.

On its product page, Vive suggests placing it "near toilets, showers, bathtubs, corners, or walls with limited space," and describes it as made with people with limited mobility or strength in mind. That makes it a reasonable pick for a household that has already tried a straight bar and found it awkward, or for a bathroom where wall space is short.

The finish is brushed nickel. Care is about as simple as it gets: Vive's instruction is to wipe it with a damp cloth and then dry it.

Key specs

These figures come from Vive's product page for the Angled Metal Grab Bar:

  • Overall length: 16 inches, made of two 8-inch sections
  • Angle: 45 degrees
  • Grip diameter: 1.25 inches
  • Material: stainless steel
  • Finish: brushed nickel

Before you order, it helps to stand in the bathroom and picture where a hand would land on the way down to a seat and on the way back up. Hold a tape measure at that spot and check that a 16-inch bar at an angle has room to sit there. A grip just over an inch across is a size most adult hands can wrap around, but if the person using it has a smaller or weaker grip, try closing a hand around something similar first.

What's in the box

Vive lists three things in the package:

  • One angled grab bar
  • Six screws
  • Six wall anchors

Vive says the bar comes with the hardware and instructions it needs. Vive's page does not say which wall types the bar suits or how it should be placed, so read the included instructions before any drilling, and have the bar mounted by someone you trust to do the job properly.

Warranty

According to Vive, the bar carries:

  • Vive Health guarantee: one year
  • Registration: within 30 days of buying it

Vive's guarantee policy page sets out how it handles coverage in general. Keep your order email somewhere easy to find, and register soon after the bar arrives so the 30-day window does not slip by.
