A good desk for a growing student needs to change with them. The Smirthwaite Study Desk adjusts in height, offers a top that can tilt or lie flat, and keeps supplies in a compartment underneath. It is now on our shelf, and here is what Smirthwaite says about it.
What it is and who it suits
This is a wooden desk made for learning, whether at home or in a classroom. Smirthwaite made it as a partner for two of its own chairs, and we carry both: the Smirthwaite Heathfield Chair and the Smirthwaite Brookfield Chair.
The top can stay flat for writing, building or eating, or tilt for reading and drawing. Smirthwaite recommends a working angle somewhere between 10 and 20 degrees when it is tilted. Under the desktop there is a compartment that holds books, therapy tools and toys, so the things a student uses every day stay within reach.
Leg height is set with a hexagonal key that Smirthwaite supplies. A therapist or clinician can advise on size and set-up, particularly when the desk will be paired with a positioning chair.

The two sizes meet at 20.5 in, where Size 1 tops out and Size 2 begins. If the right height for your student sits close to 20.5 in, think about which way they are likely to grow before choosing. Measure the seated height of the chair it will be used with before choosing.

The desk is delivered assembled and ready to use, with the hexagonal key for setting the legs. Smirthwaite does not list any other contents.
Warranty
Under Smirthwaite's terms and conditions:
- Materials and workmanship are covered for 2 years from delivery.
- Accident, neglect, misuse, not following the instructions, and normal wear and tear are excluded.
- A charge may apply if the desk cannot be repaired under the warranty, and you will be told before it is made.
- Smirthwaite Customer Services handles claims and advises on next steps.
- The warranty is in addition to your legal rights.
