Pride Maxima 4-wheel: a 500 lb scooter with a captain's seat

New on our shelf: the Pride Maxima 4-wheel, model SC941, with an SC941-PES version that adds a power elevating seat. Pride places it in its ultra heavy duty scooter class, with a 500 lb capacity (Pride Mobility: Maxima 4-Wheel).

Who it suits

This is a scooter for a larger rider who wants four wheels under a wide, supportive seat. The captain's seat is 22 inches wide; it turns, tilts back slightly and sets anywhere from 18 to 20 inches deep. Riding is on solid tires, so there are no flats to deal with.

The Maxima is built around a sturdy, roomy ride rather than portability, so it is a scooter that stays local. The Maxima does not come apart and weighs 196.8 lbs without batteries, so plan for home, the neighborhood and places you can ride to, rather than the car trunk. For some riders that is exactly the point: a scooter that is always ready by the door.

Key specs

Figures from Pride Mobility's specification sheet:

  • Model number: SC941 (SC941 - PES with power elevating seat)
  • Maximum weight capacity: 500 lbs.
  • Maximum speed: up to 5.8 mph
  • Range per charge: up to 19.5 miles
  • Turning radius: 53"
  • Length: 47.5"
  • Width (base, not including seat): 27"
  • Ground clearance: 2.25" at motor
  • Seat: high-back, depth-adjustable, black vinyl, 22" W x 18"-20" D
  • Seat-to-ground height: 22.1"-24.1"; 22.32"-28.56" w/PES
  • Disassembly: NA (unit does not disassemble)
  • Batteries: Gel, 58Ah, NF-22, 36.5 lbs. each

Reaching higher

The PES version lifts the seat an extra 6.25 inches. Pride's point is that this helps you reach cabinets and countertops while seated, which can make a kitchen or a store shelf more usable. The seat-to-ground height runs 22.1 to 24.1 inches on the standard seat and 22.32 to 28.56 inches with the PES.

Range and room to turn

Two 58Ah NF-22 gel batteries give up to 19.5 miles per charge at up to 5.8 mph. Four wheels need more turning room: the radius is 53 inches, against 49 for the three-wheel Maxima. The scooter is 47.5 inches long and the base is 27 inches wide, so measure doorways, hallways and the spot where it will charge. Pride offers both versions in Garnet Red or Ocean Blue. Standard equipment includes LED lighting all round, a seatbelt, a mirror and a USB port at the tiller.

Before you order

  • Measure doorways, hallways and the spot where it will charge against the 27-inch base and 47.5-inch length.
  • Find a place to turn around: four wheels need a 53-inch turning radius.
  • Decide on the standard or power elevating seat before you order.
  • If it must ride in a vehicle, plan for a vehicle lift; it does not come apart.

If you are weighing this model against others, the free fit assessment is a good place to start, and our shipping by state page covers how it reaches your door.
