MPS pedal guards: covering the pedals when you drive by hand

Once a driver brakes and accelerates by hand, the original pedals are still there on the floor. A foot can drift onto them without meaning to. The MPS Accelerator and Brake Pedal Guards, new on our shelf, cover them.

What they are and who they suit

On its product page, MPS says the guard is meant "to prevent inadvertent contact with the vehicle's accelerator and brake pedals." MPS adds that driving evaluators often suggest one once hand controls go into a vehicle.

So these guards are not a stand-alone driving aid. They are a companion to hand controls such as the MPS Monarch Mark 1A or the Electronic Monarch.

Two versions

Whether to cover one pedal or both is a question for the driving evaluation. MPS's evaluation page says it is essential to have an evaluation from a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS) first, ahead of driving with any driving aid, and that the specialist determines what adaptive equipment is needed.

Questions to bring to your evaluation

  • Do I need the accelerator covered, or both pedals?
  • Will anyone else drive this vehicle with the pedals, and how often?
  • Which hand controls and other aids are you recommending alongside the guard?

Writing the answers down makes it easy to match the right version when you order.

Sharing the car

Many families share one vehicle between a driver who uses hand controls and others who use the pedals. MPS designed the guards with that in mind. Its Quick Release, MPS says, "makes removal easy when not needed by other drivers." Take the guard out, and the pedals are ready for a foot again.

MPS also says a qualified mobility professional can usually move the guard to your next vehicle, so it can go with you when you change cars.

Warranty

Delivery and installation

A pedal guard has to fit your vehicle's pedals correctly to do its job. We work with a team of credentialed local specialists to guarantee timely, safe, and optimal delivery and installation.

The fitting depends on your vehicle and on whether you need one pedal covered or two, so there is no shelf price. The fit check on the product page asks a few questions and gives you the price for your setup. Delivery coverage is on our shipping by state page.
