Vive Raised Toilet Seat: added height with handles that come off

A standard toilet sits fairly low, and for many people the hardest part of using it is the last few inches on the way down and the first few on the way back up. A raised seat simply lifts that starting point. The Vive Raised Toilet Seat is now on our shelf, and it comes with handles on both sides. Here is what Vive publishes.

What it is and who it suits

The seat rests on top of the toilet bowl and is held in place by a knob that you tighten by hand, so no tools are needed. Vive says that on most toilets you can leave your current seat and lid where they are. One thing to know up front: with the raised seat in place, the toilet lid will not close.

Two padded handrails fit into slots along each side, and a push pin locks each one. When the household does not need them, or when another family member prefers the bathroom without them, they come out. At roughly five pounds, the whole seat is light enough to pack for a stay away from home.

This style suits someone who wants both height and something to push against, without adding a separate frame around the toilet.

Think, too, about everyone who shares the bathroom. Since the lid stays open while the seat is on, and the rails can be pulled out, you can choose to leave the seat in place full time or put it on only when it is needed. The hand knob makes switching a short job. If the seat will be moved often, keep the rails and knob together in one spot so nothing goes missing.

Key specs

These figures come from Vive's product page for the Raised Toilet Seat:

  • Weight capacity: 250 pounds
  • Outside dimensions: 18 by 16.5 by 5 inches
  • Opening: 9.5 by 8.5 inches
  • Space between the handrails: 17 inches
  • Handle height: about 6 inches
  • Fits bowls: standard (16.5 inches) and elongated (18.5 inches)
  • Seat weight: about 5 pounds
  • Materials: composite base, closed-cell foam, aluminum

Check two things at home before ordering. Measure your bowl from the bolt holes to the front edge to confirm whether it is standard or elongated. Then compare the 17-inch gap between the handrails with the user's seated hip width, because the rails sit close on either side.
