Vive Core Shower Commode Transport Chair: one chair, three jobs

In a small bathroom, every piece of equipment competes for floor space. A separate commode, shower seat and transport chair can crowd a room quickly. The Vive Core Shower Commode Transport Chair, now on our shelf, folds those three roles into one rolling frame. Here is what Vive says about it and how the numbers line up.

What it is and who it suits

The Core is a wheeled seat that a companion can roll from the bedroom to the bathroom, park over the toilet or under the shower, and roll back again. Vive presents it as a way to save space during daily personal care. When the chair is in position, the wheels lock so it stays put.

The frame is aluminum, which Vive describes as rust-resistant and made for wet rooms. The seat is padded and paired with soft armrests and a backrest. A removable bucket sits under the seat for commode use and lifts out to be emptied and cleaned. The footrests fold up when they are not needed.

This chair suits a household where a companion helps with bathing and toileting and wants fewer transfers between pieces of equipment. As a transport chair, it is moved by a companion rather than by the rider.

Key specs

These figures come from Vive's product page for the Core Shower Commode Transport Wheelchair:

  • Weight capacity: 275 lbs
  • Chair weight: 15 lbs
  • Seat: 17 by 17 inches
  • Seat height: 21 inches
  • Overall height: 36 to 38 inches
  • Base, unfolded: 22 by 28.5 inches
  • Backrest: 18 by 6.75 inches
  • Width between the handles: 17.5 inches
  • Wheels: 4 inches, front and back
  • Bucket: 12 by 9 by 6 inches
  • Folding footrest: 21 by 10 inches
  • Materials: aluminum and plastic

The measurements to check at home are the 21 inch seat height, which must clear your toilet if you plan to roll the chair over it, and the 22 by 28.5 inch base, which has to fit inside your shower or tub area and through the bathroom door. A tape measure and five minutes will answer both questions.

What's in the box

Vive lists the contents simply as the Core Shower Commode Transport Wheelchair.

Warranty

On the same product page, Vive states a one-year guarantee for this chair and asks owners to register it within 30 days of purchase. Vive's guarantee policy page explains how its coverage works.

Setting up the bathroom

Before the chair arrives, walk the route it will take from the bedroom to the bathroom. Rugs, thresholds and tight corners are easier to deal with in advance than with a rider seated. In the shower, check that the floor is level enough for the wheels to lock securely. Keep towels and toiletries within reach of where the chair will park, so the companion does not have to step away. After each use, empty and rinse the bucket, and wipe the frame and seat dry so the chair is ready next time.
