Smirthwaite Juni Chair: a bright, adjustable chair for young children

Homework at the kitchen table, a craft at nursery, a snack on the living room floor: young children spend a lot of their day sitting, and a chair that fits makes those moments easier. The Smirthwaite Juni Chair is a cheerful, adjustable children's chair, and it is new on our shelf.

What it is and who it suits

Smirthwaite designed the Juni for children who need minimal levels of postural support, with an age guide of 18 months to 12 years. Lumbar support is built into the backrest, and both the seat and the back are contoured; Smirthwaite says that contouring is there to help with alignment while the child feels secure. The maker suggests it for nurseries, classrooms and the home, where it works for mealtimes, homework or play at floor level.

Adjustment is a big part of the design. As a child grows you can raise the seat, lengthen it and reset the armrests, and the backrest reclines in 5-degree steps. Smirthwaite also makes a family of add-ons for the Juni, including boosters for a dining table or breakfast bar, mobile bases and a hi-lo base.

If you are unsure which size to pick, a therapist or clinician can advise on size and set-up.

Key specs

These figures come from Smirthwaite's Juni Chair page:

  • Size 1: height 6.3-8.7 in, width 9.4 in, user weight up to 66 lb, chair weight 9 lb
  • Size 2: height 7.9-11 in, width 11 in, up to 88 lb, chair weight 13 lb
  • Size 3: height 9.4-13.4 in, width 12.8 in, up to 110 lb, chair weight 18 lb
  • Size 4: height 11.8-15.7 in, width 14.4 in, up to 132 lb, chair weight 22 lb
  • Depth: 7.1-9.4 in on size 1, up to 12.6-16.5 in on size 4
  • Backrest angle: 95°, 100° or 105°

We carry all four sizes, each in Blue, Red or Lime. At 9 to 22 pounds depending on size, the Juni is light enough to carry from room to room, which is handy when the same chair is used at the table and on the floor.

What's in the box

According to the Juni user manual, the chair comes packed in a single box with its contoured seat, backrest, armrests, leg outriggers and a pelvic lap strap. It usually arrives assembled, apart from any special accessories. If a chair comes part-assembled, the manual says no tools are needed to finish the job: the handwheels and washers for it are supplied.

Warranty

Smirthwaite's terms and conditions describe the warranty this way:

  • Materials and workmanship: 2 years, starting from delivery.
  • Outside the cover: accident, neglect, misuse, not following the instructions, and normal wear and tear.
  • A charge may apply if goods cannot be repaired under the warranty; Smirthwaite advises you before that.

  • The warranty is given in addition to your legal rights.
