Smirthwaite Hi-Riser Changing Bench: electric, with a rail that stows

A changing bench gets used several times a day, so small details add up: how high it goes, how easily the rail gets out of the way, and whether a lift can reach it. The Smirthwaite Hi-Riser Changing Bench is one of the benches we now carry, and this post lays out what Smirthwaite publishes about it.

What it is and who it suits

The Hi-Riser is an electric bench that mounts on the wall. A handset moves the bed up and down, so the caregiver can choose a working height instead of stooping. Smirthwaite makes it for both children and adults and says most mobile or ceiling lifts can be used with it, which matters if transfers onto the bench are done with a hoist.

The safety side rail tucks away underneath the bed. Smirthwaite's point is that a rail which stows below the surface leaves a clear edge for moving across from a wheelchair, a shower chair or a toilet seat. When the bench is not in use, it folds back toward the wall.

You choose a frame finish to suit the room. Smirthwaite matches the powder coated finish to dry rooms and the stainless steel finish to bathrooms. With nine sizes in each finish, there is a wide choice of bed length and width, and a therapist or clinician can advise on size and set-up for the person who will use it.

Key specs

These figures come from Smirthwaite's Hi-Riser Changing Bench page:

  • Maximum user weight: 441 lb
  • Height travel: 15.7 to 39.4 in
  • Bed length: 47.2 to 82.7 in, by size
  • Bed width: 21.7 in, 23.6 in or 25.6 in
  • Overall width with the safety guard: 34.4 to 38.4 in
  • Safety guard height: 6.5 in
  • Wall frame: 27.6 in wide, 4.3 in deep, 61 in high
  • Stored width: 12 in
  • Product weight: 176 to 212 lb, by size
  • Frame: powder coated or stainless steel

A practical tip: decide on the size by the length of the person lying down, then confirm the overall width fits beside the caregiver's working space. If a ceiling lift track is already in place, check that the bench will sit under it.
