Pride PX4: an outdoor scooter with key fob ignition

The Pride PX4 (model SC134) is now on our shelf. Pride designed it for outdoor use, on asphalt, concrete, gravel and hard-packed ground, and it starts in an unusual way: there is no key to turn; you hold an NFC fob close to the tiller, and every fob is paired with one scooter only (Pride Mobility: PX4).

Who it suits

The PX4 suits a rider who spends real time outdoors and wants a comfortable, capable machine for it. Full suspension, 13-inch pneumatic tires and memory foam seating are all aimed at a smoother ride on mixed surfaces. It carries up to 500 lbs.

It is a big scooter, and that shapes where it fits in your life. It is 55.9 inches long and 27.83 inches wide, turns in an 82.28-inch radius and, with its standard seat and batteries fitted, it weighs 351.4 lbs. Plan for a garage, carport or other covered space with power, and check every gate and path before you order.

Key specs

Figures from Pride Mobility's specification sheet:

  • Model number: SC134
  • Weight capacity: 500 lbs.
  • Range per charge: up to 23.4 miles
  • Turning radius: 82.28"
  • Overall length: 55.9"
  • Overall width: 27.83"
  • Ground clearance: 3.5 inches to motor
  • Tires: 13" pneumatic front and rear
  • Weight with standard seat and batteries: 351.4 lbs.
  • Seat: high back, black vinyl, 19.2" W x 21.25" D
  • Batteries: (2) 12V sealed lead-acid, 75Ah
  • Suspension: full suspension

Range and batteries

Two 75Ah sealed lead-acid batteries, each 48.8 lbs, are rated for as much as 23.4 miles on a charge. That covers a long day out. Pneumatic tires grip well and cushion bumps; they do need their air pressure checked from time to time, so add that to your routine.

Seat and setup

The high back seat is 19.2 inches wide and 21.25 inches deep and sits on a slider so you can set your reach to the tiller. Seat-to-ground height is 24.2 to 25.6 inches. Pride offers the PX4 in nine colors, including camo patterns, so it can be as quiet or as bold as you like.

The NFC fob is more than a novelty. Without the fob that belongs to it, the scooter does not start, which gives you some peace of mind when it is parked outside a store or at the edge of a field.

Before you order

  • Storage: plan a garage, carport or covered space with an outlet; with batteries and seat it weighs 351.4 lbs.
  • Turning room: an 82.28-inch turning radius needs open space, so think about driveways and paths rather than hallways.
  • Routes: walk your usual outdoor route and note curbs, gates and narrow spots.
  • Upkeep: pneumatic tires need their pressure checked; keep a gauge and the owner's manual handy.

Before you choose, our fit assessment asks about your home, your car and your usual trips, and the shipping by state page explains delivery to the lower 48 states and DC.

Warranty

Pride lists these terms on its testing standards and warranty page (Pride warranty for the PX4):

  • Frame: lifetime limited
  • Drivetrain: 2-year limited
  • Electronics: 2-year limited
  • Battery: 6 months
  • Original purchaser; service by an authorized Pride provider
  • Labor, service calls and shipping not covered unless Pride authorizes them in advance
