Pride Jazzy Elite 14: front-wheel drive for hills and ramps

Pride pitches the Jazzy Elite 14 as a chair that does well both inside and outside (Pride Mobility). It pulls from the front: twin motors turn 14-inch knobby, foam-filled tires, with small anti-tips ahead and casters behind (Pride specifications). Pride says it set the chair up this way for climbing hills and ramps and for handling changes in surface (Pride Mobility), so take a look if your day crosses a yard, a driveway or a ramp to the door.

With a 300 lb rating and a 4.0 mph top speed, its range by Pride's numbers is 18 miles at 300 lbs or 21 miles at 200 lbs (Pride specifications).

Fit and handling

It turns in 24 inches and is 24.25 inches across (Pride specifications). Under the battery tray there are 3 inches of clearance (Pride specifications).

The high-back seat offers a slight recline, a depth adjustment and a headrest (Pride Mobility). Standard widths are 18, 20 and 22 inches, the largest seat being 22 by 22 inches, set 20 to 22 inches above the floor (Pride specifications). Shrouds come in blue or red (Pride Mobility).

Take off the seat and batteries and the biggest piece left weighs 99 lbs; each NF-22 battery is another 37.5 lbs (Pride specifications). Plan on a lift or a ramp van for car trips.
