Pride BAJA Bandit: a 400 lb outdoor scooter with full suspension

The BAJA Bandit has arrived on our shelf. It comes from BAJA, Pride Mobility's line of outdoor scooters, and Pride introduces it as the outdoor scooter "for the bold" (BAJA: Bandit). That is a fair summary of what it is for: grass, gravel paths, uneven sidewalks and the long way around the park, rather than tight store aisles.

Who it suits

Think of the Bandit for a rider who spends most of the day outdoors and wants a scooter that does not flinch at rougher ground. Full suspension, 9-inch solid tires and 4.45 inches of clearance at mid-deck all point that way, and the top speed of up to 8 mph covers ground quickly on open paths. Pride rates it for riders up to 400 lbs.

It is a full-size machine, 49.6 inches long and 27.83 inches wide, with a 53-inch turning radius. Measure your gate, garage door and any path you use before you order, and think about where it will be stored and charged.

Battery choices and range

The Bandit runs on lithium, and you choose the pack size. Pride's figures for the 20Ah pack are up to 14.5 miles with a 220 lb rider and up to 11.25 miles at 400 lbs. The 40Ah pack roughly doubles that: up to 29 miles at 220 lbs and up to 22.5 miles at 400 lbs. The 40Ah pack weighs 35.2 lbs against 20.8 lbs for the 20Ah, which matters if you lift it out to charge. As with every scooter, hills, heat, cold and stop-and-go riding cut real-world range, so plan with a margin.

Comfort and control

The stadium seat sits on a slider so you can set the distance to the tiller. Pride also lists a USB port, LED lighting and a supplemental hand brake alongside the regenerative and electromechanical brakes. The heaviest piece is 71 lbs, so if you plan to take it apart for a vehicle, be honest about who will be lifting.

Before you order

• Where will it live? A scooter this size needs a dry, covered spot near an outlet for charging.
• Which pack fits your days? Add up your longest usual outing and leave a cushion of spare range.
• Will it travel in a vehicle? With a 71 lb heaviest piece, decide now whether you will lift pieces or use a vehicle lift.
• Check gates, garage doors and paths against the 27.83-inch width.

Before you choose, our fit assessment asks about your home, your car and your usual trips, and the shipping by state page explains delivery to the lower 48 states and DC.
