MPS Monarch Mark 1A: mechanical hand controls in four styles

For many drivers, hand controls are what turn a car back into a way to get to work, to church or to see family. The MPS Monarch Mark 1A Mechanical Hand Controls are now on our shelf.

What they are and who they suit

The Monarch Mark 1A connects a hand lever to the vehicle's brake and accelerator pedals through a mechanical linkage, so the driver can slow, stop and go without using their feet. It comes from MPS, a company incorporated in 1964.

Who is it for? That question belongs to a professional. MPS says on its evaluation page that before anyone drives with a driving aid, it is essential to have an evaluation from a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS). The evaluation includes a clinical assessment and a behind-the-wheel assessment, and the specialist decides whether any adaptive driving equipment is needed. MPS says it can take three to eight hours, and links to a directory for finding an evaluator.

Four styles

The Mark 1A comes in four styles, each moved a different way. From MPS's pages for the Right Angle, Push/Rock, Push/Pull and Brake Only versions:

  • Right Angle (MM1A): push to brake, press down to go. Includes an accelerator lock-out.
  • Push/Rock (MMPR): push to brake, rock back to go. Includes an accelerator lock-out.
  • Push/Pull (MMPP): push to brake, pull back to go, with an upright or standard handle.
  • Brake Only (BO): push forward to brake.

Each style asks for a different movement of the hand and arm. Since the evaluation looks at physical function, bring the specialist's written recommendation with you when you choose.

What the accelerator lock-out is for

On the Right Angle and Push/Rock styles, the accelerator lock-out can be switched on when other people drive the vehicle; MPS says it prevents "unintended hand control acceleration." In a household where more than one person drives the same car, that is a practical detail to weigh when choosing a style.

Delivery and installation

Hand controls are fitted to a specific vehicle and adjusted for the driver, and they should only be used after training. We work with a team of credentialed local specialists to guarantee timely, safe, and optimal delivery and installation.

Because the setup depends on your vehicle and the style recommended for you, there is no shelf price. The fit check on the product page asks a few questions and then gives you the price for your setup. See shipping by state for delivery where you live.
