MPS Left Foot Accelerator: a gas pedal to the left of the brake

Some drivers need to work the gas with their left foot instead of the right. The MPS Left Foot Accelerator, now on our shelf, moves the accelerator to the other side of the brake so they can.

What it is and how it works

According to MPS's product page, the pedal sits "to the left of the brake pedal," and a mechanical linkage connects it to the accelerator the vehicle already has. Pressing the new pedal moves the original one, so the vehicle's own accelerator still does the work.

Two other parts make it practical for everyday life:

  • Pedal Guard. This shields the original accelerator pedal so it is not used by mistake while the left pedal is in place. MPS includes it.
  • Quick Release base. MPS says the Quick Release makes removal easy when other drivers do not need the left pedal. In a household that shares one car, this lets everyone drive it the way they are used to.

MPS also says that in most cases a qualified mobility professional can transfer the device to your next vehicle.

Who decides if it is right for you

MPS asks drivers to start with an evaluation. Its evaluation page says it is essential to have an evaluation from a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS) first, before anyone drives with a driving aid. The evaluation includes a clinical part and a behind-the-wheel part, and the specialist decides whether adaptive equipment is needed. MPS says it can take three to eight hours and that training is tailored to each person.

Driving with your left foot on the gas is a new skill, even for someone who has driven for decades. Habits built over years with the right foot take time to change, so training before driving on your own is time well spent. Practice in a quiet place first, with the person who trained you.

Delivery and installation

A left foot accelerator has to be fitted to your vehicle's pedals and set so it works smoothly and safely. We work with a team of credentialed local specialists to guarantee timely, safe, and optimal delivery and installation.

There is no shelf price, because the fitting depends on the vehicle. The fit check on the product page asks a few questions and gives you the price for your setup. See shipping by state for delivery where you live.
