MPS Electronic Monarch: hand controls with electronic acceleration

Hand controls come in two broad kinds: fully mechanical, and a mix of electronic and mechanical. The MPS Electronic Monarch Hand Controls, new on our shelf, are the second kind.

What they are and who they suit

On its product page, MPS says the Electronic Monarch "combines electronic acceleration with mechanical braking." In plain terms, the driver's hand works the gas through an electronic connection, while the brake still works through a direct mechanical link to the pedal. MPS calls the build sleek and compact.

The control attaches to the existing MPS mounting system. If a vehicle already has MPS hand controls, that is a useful point to raise when planning the change.

As for who should use it, MPS is clear that a professional decides. Its evaluation page says that before driving with a driving aid, it is essential to have an evaluation from a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS). The specialist runs a clinical assessment and a behind-the-wheel assessment, then decides whether adaptive driving equipment is needed and what kind.

The 50% switch

Every MPS electronic hand control has what MPS calls the 50% switch. In MPS's words, it "allows you to reduce the sensitivity of the accelerator." That gives finer control when only a little throttle is needed, for example easing through a parking lot or creeping forward in traffic.

The product name also includes an intent switch. MPS names it but does not describe how it works on the product page, so ask your evaluator about it if it matters to your setup.

Styles and versions

MPS offers the Electronic Monarch in three styles, and each comes in a left-hand and a right-hand version, so there are six in all:

  • Right Angle: EMM1A (left hand), EMM1A-RH (right hand)
  • Push-Rock: EMMPR (left hand), EMMPR-RH (right hand)
  • Push-Pull: EMMPP (left hand), EMMPP-RH (right hand)

Which hand and which style is a decision for the driving evaluation. Bring the specialist's recommendation with you, and choose the version that matches it.

Key specs

  • Acceleration: electronic
  • Braking: mechanical
  • Styles: Right Angle, Push-Rock, Push-Pull
  • Hand: left or right
  • Sensitivity: 50% switch
  • Mounting: existing MPS mounting system

Warranty

MPS says on its Right Angle hand control page that all MPS products are covered by a 5 year limited warranty.

Delivery and installation

An electronic hand control is wired into the vehicle and adjusted for the driver, and training should come before any time on the road. We work with a team of credentialed local specialists to guarantee timely, safe, and optimal delivery and installation.

The right version and the installation depend on your vehicle and the evaluation, so there is no shelf price. The fit check on the product page asks a few questions and gives you the price for your setup. See shipping by state for delivery where you live.
