Harmar AL835 Pickup 350 HD: a heavy-duty hoist for pickup trucks

Power chairs and full-size scooters are heavy, and a pickup bed sits high off the ground. Put those two facts together and the case for a powered hoist is easy to see. The Harmar AL835 Pickup 350 HD is a truck hoist rated for 350 lb, and it is new to our shelf.

What the AL835 does

On its product page, Harmar lists the AL835 for manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs and scooters, and describes it as compatible with most trucks. Where it is installed decides the loading side: the device is lifted and secured near the driver side or the passenger side. Both lifting and rotation are powered, and the lift is switched on and off from the dashboard.

Two design details are aimed squarely at trucks:

• A dual-strapped hook that Harmar says is designed to keep the device from spinning while it is loaded and unloaded.
• An offset base that mounts tightly into the truck's sidewall and fender walls.

The heavy-duty sibling of the AL825

Harmar also makes the AL825 Pickup Speed Hoist, which lists the same arm height, length range and installed weight. The AL825 is rated for 210 lb and, by Harmar's account, lifts at twice the speed of heavy duty models. The AL835, the HD of the pair, is rated for up to 350 lb instead.

A simple way to choose: weigh your device as it travels, with its battery and anything else that stays on it. If it comes to more than 210 lb, the AL835 is the one of the two that can lift it.

• You drive a pickup truck and want the device to ride in the bed.
• Your power chair or scooter weighs up to 350 lb.
• You want the lift on whichever side suits your parking and loading.

Take a look at the bed before you choose. A tonneau cover, cap, bedliner or toolbox can affect how a hoist fits, so mention anything like that in the fit check.

What is included

The AL835 comes with a universal base adapter. Securing the mobility device takes a docking device, which Harmar does not include, so tell us about your device in the fit check.

Warranty

Harmar's three-year transferable vehicle lift warranty applies:

• Parts are warranted for 3 years against defects in material, mechanical and electrical components.
• Labor cost, batteries, paint, rust and covers are excluded, and maintenance, adjustments and vehicle defects are not covered.
• Coverage starts on the date of initial installation, with the certificate returned within 10 days of installation.
• Proper installation, maintenance and operation by an Authorized Harmar Distributor or Certified Harmar Installer is required.
• The warranty is transferable as long as the application is approved by Harmar's Compatibility Calculator.
