Harmar makes its AL580 hitch lift in two sizes, and the difference comes down to the size of your chair's drive wheels. The Harmar AL580XL Extra Large Profile MWD Power Wheelchair Lift is the larger of the two, made for mid-wheel drive (MWD) power chairs on 14 in drive wheels. It is new to our shelf.
AL580 or AL580XL?
On the AL580 / AL580XL page, Harmar lists the standard AL580 for mid-wheel drive power chairs with 10 in drive wheels and the AL580XL for those with 14 in drive wheels. Harmar says the XL "offers more room" for those chairs. Its platform is 17.5 in x 27 in, compared with 16.5 in x 27 in on the standard model.
So the first step is simple: find your chair's drive wheel size in its manual or specification sheet, or ask the chair's supplier. If the drive wheels are 14 in, the XL is the version to look at.
Who it suits
Consider the AL580XL if:
- You use a mid-wheel drive power chair with 14 in drive wheels.
- Your chair weighs up to 350 lb.
- You would like the chair held without straps or tie-downs to fasten.
- Your minivan, SUV, truck or van has a Class II or greater hitch, or can be fitted with one.
The hitch class is worth noting. Harmar rates this lift for a Class II or greater hitch, which is a lower minimum than many of the heavier platform lifts we carry, and it ships with a Class III hitch adapter. Even so, the hitch and the vehicle still have to carry the lift and the chair together, so check both ratings before you decide.
Securement
The chair is held on the platform by wheel cradles and a padded hold-down arm. Harmar's page states that no straps or tie-downs are required and that the chair needs no modifications. When nothing is on it, the lift folds automatically. Lifting and folding are both fully powered, so the platform raises the chair and folds up for driving without anyone lifting it by hand.

Warranty
Harmar's three-year transferable vehicle lift warranty covers the AL580XL. Its terms include:
- Parts are covered for three (3) years against defects in material, mechanical and electrical components.
- Labor cost, batteries, paint, rust and covers are excluded, and the warranty does not cover maintenance or adjustments.
- Defects in the vehicle are not covered.
- The warranty starts on the date of initial installation, and the certificate is due back to Harmar within ten (10) days.
- It requires installation by an Authorized Harmar Distributor or Certified Harmar Installer.
- It can transfer as long as Harmar's Compatibility Calculator approves the application.
