Vehicle lifts in Nevada: plate height, plate lamps and heat

Vehicle lifts in Nevada: plate height, plate lamps and heat
When a Nevada driver adds a scooter carrier to the hitch, the rear plate is the detail most likely to cause trouble. Nevada's statute asks for the plate to sit at least 12 inches off the ground, "clearly visible" and "clearly legible," and it requires a lamp that lights the plate at night. A folded platform can block either one.
The answer is usually a plate bracket on the lift, or a lift that keeps the device inside or in the trunk. Below are the exact rules, then lifts for different vehicles and a word on the heat.
Nevada's plate display and lamp statutes
Under NRS 482.275(5), "Every license plate, including a digital license plate device, must at all times be securely fastened to the vehicle to which it is assigned so as to prevent the plate from swinging and at a height not less than 12 inches from the ground, measuring from the bottom of such plate, in a place and position to be clearly visible, and must be maintained free from foreign materials and in a condition to be clearly legible." Subsection 1 places one plate "in the rear" and, with some exceptions, one in the front.
Nevada's lamp statute covers both the taillights and the plate light. Vehicles need at least two tail lamps that "emit a red light plainly visible from a distance of 500 feet to the rear," mounted "at a height of not more than 72 inches nor less than 15 inches," and "Every passenger car, bus and truck under 80 inches in overall width must be equipped with a lamp so constructed and placed as to illuminate with a white light the rear registration or license plate and render it clearly legible from a distance of 50 feet to the rear." Those lamps "must be wired to be lighted whenever the headlamps or auxiliary driving lamps are lighted" (NRS 484D.115).
So if a hitch lift hides the plate, puts it below 12 inches, or leaves it in the dark, the setup does not match these sections. We found no Nevada statute that addresses wheelchair or scooter carriers specifically, and no state statement on relocating a plate onto a lift. For a ruling on a specific installation, the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles is the agency to ask.
We also looked for a statement from Nevada's vocational rehabilitation program about vehicle modifications and could not open one, so we leave that program out here rather than guess. Anyone working, or preparing for a job, can put the question to Nevada's vocational rehabilitation office themselves.
Choosing a lift for your Nevada vehicle
- Harmar AL010/050 Micro Outside Lift: carries smaller scooters, power chairs and manual wheelchairs up to 135 lb on a Class I or greater hitch; a license plate mount is included and a license plate riser is available.
- Bruno ASL-275L Out-Sider: a hitch platform with a self-leveling deck and device-specific securements, fitting Class II and Class III hitches with 6 to 24 in of height adjustment; Bruno notes that a vehicle's tongue weight rating often decides whether a lift is suitable.
- ComfyGO GO Lift Portable Lift: a portable lift on casters that raises a wheelchair or scooter from 9.5 in to 32.8 in for loading into a trunk, used on flat, non-slippery surfaces; ComfyGO is clear it is never a patient lift. Nothing is mounted on the bumper.
- Harmar AL100-DE Dual Entry Scooter Lift: a 350 lb hitch lift with a guide rail for three-wheel scooters and powered lifting and folding, on a Class II or higher hitch.
Specifications come from each product's page on our site, which follows the maker's published figures.
Heat, monsoon storms and a device outdoors
NOAA's Nevada climate summary describes Las Vegas summer highs averaging 102°F, with about nine days a year at 110°F or higher, and notes that "Over the last 26 years, the annual number of very hot days has been above average." It also says "Summer monsoon rains frequently lead to disruptive flooding in the Las Vegas Valley."
For a scooter or chair riding on a hitch platform, sun and heat are the daily concern: a cover keeps the seat and controls out of direct sun while you drive and park, and the AL010/050 and AL100-DE both list a cover as an option. The GO Lift approach, loading the device into the trunk, keeps it shaded altogether. In monsoon season, avoid driving through flooded roads with a low platform behind the bumper.
Help from the Nevada Assistive Technology Collaborative
The AT3 Center lists the Nevada Assistive Technology Collaborative as the state's program, offering device loans, demonstrations, reutilization, financial loans and other state financing. If cost is the obstacle, ask NATC about its financial loan and other state financing options before choosing a lift.

Questions about vehicle lifts in Nevada
How high must a license plate be in Nevada?
NRS 482.275 requires every plate to be securely fastened so it cannot swing, at a height not less than 12 inches from the ground measured from the bottom of the plate, in a place where it is clearly visible, and kept clean and clearly legible. A hitch lift that drops the plate lower or hides it needs a bracket.
Does Nevada require a light over my rear plate?
Yes. NRS 484D.115 says every passenger car, bus and truck under 80 inches wide must have a lamp that lights the rear plate with white light so it is clearly legible from 50 feet, wired to come on with the headlamps. If a lift or bracket leaves the plate dark, it needs its own lamp.
Is there a Nevada law specifically about scooter carriers?
We did not find one. The rules that apply are the general plate display rule in NRS 482.275 and the lamp rule in NRS 484D.115. For a ruling on your specific setup, the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles is the agency to ask, and the lift maker's compatibility check is a good first step.
What if I do not want anything on my hitch?
A portable lift is one option. The ComfyGO GO Lift rolls on casters and raises a wheelchair or scooter from 9.5 in to 32.8 in so it can be loaded into a trunk, on flat, non-slippery ground. Its 24V lithium battery comes out for charging, and nothing is fixed to the vehicle.
How do I protect a scooter on a hitch lift in Nevada heat?
NOAA reports Las Vegas summer highs averaging 102°F and very hot days running above average for 26 years. A cover keeps sun off the seat and controls, and Harmar lists one as an option for its AL010/050 and AL100-DE lifts. Loading the device inside the vehicle avoids the sun entirely.
