Wherever you go

Going places takes planning when you use a wheelchair, a scooter or a walker. Will there be parking close enough? Is there a ramp, or a step nobody mentioned? Is the restroom accessible? Is the path paved? Every outing can carry a small cloud of questions. Joshua faced much bigger unknowns, and God gave him a promise that reaches every place we go.

"Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." (Joshua 1:9, King James Version)

A command with a reason

God tells Joshua three times in this chapter to be strong and courageous. That repetition suggests Joshua needed to hear it more than once. Courage is not the absence of nerves. It is going forward anyway, because of a reason stronger than the fear. God gives the reason in the last line: "for the LORD thy God is with thee."

Whithersoever

The old word "whithersoever" means wherever, to whatever place. The grocery store and the hospital. The church parking lot and the airport. A family reunion where you are not sure how the steps will go. A new job, a new school, a new neighborhood. There is no place you can go, or be taken, where God stays behind.

And if you are not going far these days, the promise still holds. The living room and the bedroom are included in "whithersoever." God is as present in the quiet places as in the adventurous ones.

Jesus with us always

Jesus ended His time on earth with a similar promise to His followers: He would be with them always, to the very end. He sent them out into a world they did not know, and He did not send them alone. That promise includes you.

Courage, one outing at a time

  • Before you leave home, pray the last line of the verse: "The Lord my God is with me wherever I go."
  • Do your planning, and then let God carry what you cannot plan for.
  • Celebrate the outings that went well, and be gentle with yourself about the ones that did not.
