Wheelchair seat width: how to measure and why an inch matters
Seat width sounds like a comfort question, and it is. It is also a doorway question, a weight question and sometimes a weight-capacity question, because when a maker widens the seat, the whole chair changes with it. This guide explains how to take the measurement, how makers size their seats, and what a wider or narrower seat does to the rest of the chair.
How to measure
You need a tape measure, a firm chair without arms, and a helper if possible.
- Sit on the firm chair with your back against the backrest, your hips all the way back and your feet flat.
- Wear the kind of clothing you usually wear when you use the chair.
- Have your helper measure straight across the widest part of your hips or thighs, whichever is wider. Holding two books or rulers against your sides and measuring between them gives a clean reading.
- Write the number down, and measure a second time to check.
That number is your hip width, not your seat width. A seat needs some room beyond it so you are not squeezed and can shift your weight, but not so much that you slide sideways or have to reach too far out to the wheels. How much room to allow depends on your body, your posture and how you will use the chair, so this is a good question to ask your doctor, physical therapist or seating specialist. If you have their recommendation, use it.
How makers size their seats
Many manual wheelchairs come in seat widths that step up 2 inches at a time:
- Vive's Core Wheelchair is listed in our store in 16, 18 or 20-inch seat widths; Vive's own page shows the 18-inch seat, 16 inches deep (Vive Health).
- Vive's Reclining Wheelchair With Headrest comes in 16, 18 or 20 inches (Vive Health).
- Feather's lightweight chairs come in 18 and 20 inches, and its HD models in 22 and 24 inches (Feather Mobility: Feather Chair, Feather Mobility: Feather Chair HD).
- For children, the Feather Kids chair comes in 12 or 14 inches (Feather Mobility sell sheet).
Because sizes come in steps, your measurement may fall between two. That is where professional advice helps most.
A wider seat makes a wider chair
Here is why an inch or two matters beyond comfort. Feather's figures show it clearly: the Feather Chair 18 in is 25 inches wide overall, and the Feather Chair 20 in is 27 inches wide overall (Feather Mobility). Two more inches of seat means two more inches of chair at every doorway.
Vive's Heavy Duty Wheelchair, with a 20-inch seat, is 27 inches wide overall, and Vive says it fits standard 30-inch doorways (Vive Health). Remember that you also need room for your hands on the push rims. Measure the clear opening of your narrowest door, as described in our doorway guide. For comparison, the ADA Standards require at least 32 inches of clear width for doors in public buildings (ADA 2010 Standards, 404.2.3); homes do not have to meet that standard, and many interior doors are narrower.
Width, weight capacity and chair weight
On some lines, seat width and weight capacity go together. Feather rates its 18-inch chair at 300 pounds (for models from January 2026), its 20-inch chair at 350 pounds, its 22-inch HD at 350 pounds and its 24-inch HD at 450 pounds (Feather Mobility: Feather Chair, Feather Mobility: Feather Chair HD). If you need a higher capacity, you may need a wider seat on that line even if your hips would fit a narrower one, or a different line.
A wider chair is often a little heavier too: Feather lists 19 pounds for the 18-inch chair and 20 pounds for the 20-inch (Feather Mobility).
Power chairs have seat sizes too
The same idea applies to power wheelchairs, where the seat is often chosen separately from the base. Pride offers the Jazzy EVO 614 HD with standard seats of 18, 20, 22 and 24 inches wide, with a maximum seat size of 24 by 24 inches (Pride specifications). The Pride Jazzy 1450 has a standard 24 by 24 inch seat, with high-back seats up to 26 inches wide (Pride specifications). Use the same hip measurement when you compare.
Too narrow, too wide
- Too narrow: the sides press on the hips and thighs, clothing rubs, and getting in and out is harder.
- Too wide: the body can lean or slide to one side, the wheels are farther to reach, and the chair is wider than it needs to be at every door.
Either way, if the chair will be used for many hours a day, ask a professional to check the fit. Pressure, posture and skin care are medical questions, and the right answer is individual.
Seat depth and height
While you are measuring, note two more numbers. Seat depth is measured from the back of the hips along the thigh toward the back of the knee; Vive's Core and Feather's lightweight chairs have 16-inch-deep seats (Vive Health, Feather Mobility). Seat-to-floor height affects how easily you transfer and whether your feet can reach the floor; Feather lists 19 inches on its 18-inch chair (Feather Mobility).
