Vive Stand Alone Toilet Rail: support at the toilet, no drilling

Renters, people in older homes with fragile tile, and anyone who simply does not want holes in the bathroom wall often ask the same question: is there a way to get handholds at the toilet without mounting anything? The Vive Stand Alone Toilet Rail is one answer, and it is now on our shelf. This post covers what Vive publishes.

What it is and who it suits

This is a freestanding frame that you set around the toilet. It rests on the floor on its own, with no bolts into the floor or the wall and no connection to the toilet. Two padded foam handrails run along either side, giving the user something firm to press down on while sitting or rising. According to Vive, it works with most toilets, round or elongated, and it can also stand at a sink or vanity.

The frame is aluminum and goes together by hand using knob screws, so you do not need a toolbox. A removable magazine basket hangs from one of the handrails, which is a small touch but a handy one.

The key limitation is height. The frame stands at a single fixed height and does not adjust, so it is important to check it against your toilet and against the user before you order.

Key specs

These figures come from Vive's product page for the Stand Alone Toilet Rail:

  • Weight capacity: 300 pounds
  • Length: 26.5 inches
  • Depth: 19 inches
  • Height: 25.5 inches (fixed)
  • Width inside the handrails: 21 inches
  • Magazine holder: 8.5 by 7.5 by 2 inches
  • Material: aluminum
  • Shipping weight: 5 lbs

Three quick checks will tell you whether it fits. Measure the width of your toilet bowl and tank to be sure they clear the 21 inches inside the rails. Measure the floor space around the toilet against the 26.5 by 19 inch footprint, watching for a nearby tub, wall or cabinet. And with the user seated on the toilet, see whether a 25.5-inch handrail would sit at a comfortable height for their hands.

Freestanding versus mounted

A freestanding rail has clear advantages: nothing to drill, nothing to patch when you move, and it can be shifted from one bathroom to another. A frame that attaches to the toilet, like Vive's Toilet Safety Rail listed below, offers adjustable height and width instead. Neither is better in every home; the right choice depends on the room and the person.
