Vive Neptune: a four-piece scooter with a delta tiller

Now on our shelf: the Vive Health Neptune Mobility Scooter. It is built around a simple promise: when the scooter has to fit in the car, it breaks into four manageable pieces, and you need no tools to do it (Vive Health: Neptune Mobility Scooter).

Who it suits

The Neptune suits a rider up to 300 lbs who wants an everyday scooter that can also travel. Vive lists carpet, tile, sidewalks, grass and uneven paths among the surfaces it can manage, so it can follow you from the living room to the park.

Steering is by a delta tiller, which Vive describes as simple to use for people whose hand movement is limited. The armrests flip up for side transfers, which helps when you move between the scooter and a chair or car seat.

Rear anti-tip wheels add security on inclines, and the battery charges on the scooter or off it, whichever is easier where you live.

Range and size

Vive lists a range of up to 16 miles on a charge and a top speed of 3.75 mph. The scooter weighs 107 lbs in total and measures 40 by 20.5 by 36 inches. Ground clearance is 2.5 inches. Vive does not list the weight of each piece in our records, so if you plan to lift it alone, email us and we will tell you what we can confirm.

Build

The frame is steel, finished in Midnight Blue, and a detachable storage basket comes with it for shopping and personal items.

How it compares

The Neptune sits in the middle of Vive's range. The King Neptune is rated for 400 lbs and has 4.25 inches of clearance; the Series A has 3.5 inches of clearance and a 298 lb rating; the smaller 3 Wheel and 4 Wheel scooters are rated for 265 lbs but have a 29 lb heaviest piece. Of these, the Neptune lists the longest range.

If your outings are long and your route includes grass or uneven paths, its combination of range, anti-tip wheels and tool-free disassembly is a sensible place to start.

Before you order

  • Capacity: Vive rates it for riders up to 300 lbs.
  • Lifting: Vive lists only the total weight, 107 lbs; if you plan to lift the pieces alone, email us first.
  • Clearance: 2.5 inches under the scooter suits sidewalks and paths; take thresholds slowly.
  • Hands: the delta tiller lets you steer with a whole hand rather than a fingertip grip.
