Vive Active Wheelchair: a 25 lb folding chair for busy days

A chair that is easy to lift tends to get used more. When the trunk is close to full and the day has several stops, a lighter frame can be the difference between taking the chair along and leaving it in the hallway. That is the thinking behind the Vive Active Wheelchair, which has just joined our shelf. Below is what Vive publishes about it, set out plainly so you can compare it with the other chairs we carry.

What it is and who it suits

Vive pitches this chair at people with full schedules: active adults, older adults, and anyone getting back on their feet after an operation or an injury who still wants a chair that keeps up. Its main selling point is weight. At 25 pounds it is one of the lighter chairs in our wheelchairs range, and it folds down for storage in a closet or a car.

Vive also says the slim build helps in narrow spots such as tight doorways and busy rooms, and that the chair rolls smoothly both inside the house and outdoors. The armrests move up or down to suit the rider, and the front end has a small angle adjustment. Anti-tip wheels are part of the package, and the chair comes ready to use straight out of the carton, with no assembly session needed on delivery day.

If you are still weighing a self-propelled chair against one pushed by a companion, our wheelchairs collection lets you see both side by side.

Key specs

These figures come from Vive's product page for the Active Wheelchair:

  • Weight capacity: 275 lbs
  • Chair weight: 25 pounds
  • Armrest height: adjustable from 12 cm to 19 cm
  • Front adjustable angle: 10 degrees
  • Color: blue

Two of these numbers deserve the most attention. The 275 lb capacity is the limit Vive sets for the rider, so check it against the person who will use the chair before you order. The 25 pound weight is what you will be lifting into the car each time, which is why this model is worth a look for anyone loading a chair on their own. Vive gives the armrest range in centimeters; 12 to 19 cm works out to a little under 5 inches up to roughly 7.5 inches.

Vive does not list seat width or seat depth among the figures we were able to confirm, so if those matter for your rider, contact us before ordering and we will check what the maker publishes.

What's in the box

Vive lists one item: the Active Wheelchair itself, supplied with its anti-tip wheels. It arrives assembled.

Warranty

Vive's product page gives a 1-year guarantee on the frame, a 90-day guarantee on the brakes, wheels and handles, and a 30-day guarantee on the chair's other parts (Vive Health: Active Wheelchair).

Vive asks owners to register the chair with Vive within 30 days of purchase. The company's guarantee policy page sets out how it handles coverage in general; a quick read now, and a saved order confirmation, will make any later request simpler.

Before you order

A light chair is only half the picture. Think about where it will live between outings: a hall closet, a corner of the bedroom, or the trunk. Open the trunk and picture the folded chair beside whatever else usually rides there, such as a cooler, groceries or a walker. Then think about who will be lifting it. If the rider will load the chair alone, practice the fold and the lift a few times at home before the first big trip, so it feels routine when it counts. And if the rider's weight is near the 275 lb limit, look at our heavier-rated chairs instead.
