Spare batteries for Vive scooters and Feather scooters and chairs

A second battery is one of the most practical things you can add to a scooter or power chair. It can wait on the charger while you ride, come along for a longer day out, or simply replace a pack that no longer holds its charge the way it used to. Three batteries are new on our shelf this season, one from Vive Health and two from Feather Mobility.

Each one is made for specific models, so the most important step is to match the battery to the scooter or chair you own. We name the fit for each below.

Vive scooter battery pack (pair)

This battery pack is Vive's replacement for its 3-wheel and 4-wheel mobility scooters (Vive Health: Mobility Scooter Battery). Inside the pack are two 12V 12AH lead-acid batteries, and the whole pack weighs 21 lbs, with a built-in carry handle.

• Fits: the Vive 3 Wheel Mobility Scooter and the Vive 4 Wheel Mobility Scooter
• Range: up to 12.4 miles per charge, as Vive rates it
• Charging: on the scooter or off it, with a compatible 3-pin cable; Vive puts a full charge at roughly 10 to 12 hours
• Size: 9.65 in long, 12.5 in wide and 5.28 in high, in black

Because a full charge takes the better part of a day, a second pack is a simple way to keep a charged one ready. Vive's product page lists a 30-day guarantee for the pack (Vive Health: Mobility Scooter Battery). Vive's guarantee policy asks that products bought outside vivehealth.com be registered within the first 30 days, so do that when it arrives.

Feather Power Scooter spare battery

This spare is the battery for the Feather Power Scooter. In Feather's description it is a sealed 25.2V 10Ah lithium battery that needs no maintenance, and it charges from the scooter's off-board charger (Feather Mobility: Feather Power Scooter).

Swapping is quick. The battery box lifts out, and Feather's owner's manual explains how to seat the new one: drop it into position, then slide it forward until it is home. Feather rates the scooter's range at 7.5 miles, so a charged spare is a practical way to go further on a long day.

Feather says this removable lithium battery meets airline requirements, and it reminds travelers that every carrier has its own rules. Confirm with yours well ahead of the trip.

Feather Power Chair spare battery

This one is the spare for the Feather Folding Power Chair. It is a lithium-ion battery in a closed case that comes out of the chair, according to Feather (Feather Mobility: Feather Power Chair).

Charging happens off the chair: lift the battery from the power base, then connect the charger that comes with it directly to the battery. That means the chair can stay folded in the car while the battery charges indoors, and a second battery can be charging while you use the first.

Here too, Feather says the battery is suitable for air travel and asks you to read each airline's guidelines before you fly.

Battery care, briefly

Whatever battery you use, follow the maker's charging instructions in your owner's manual, use the charger the maker specifies, and store spare batteries somewhere cool and dry. If a battery is damaged, swollen or leaking, stop using it and contact the maker.
