Smirthwaite Easi-Lift Changing Bench: wall-hung, no floor fixings

Some rooms simply will not take a bench bolted to the floor. There may be pipes running under the tile, cables across the surface, or a floor that was never built to carry fixings. Smirthwaite designed the Easi-Lift Changing Bench for that situation: everything hangs from a frame on the wall, and nothing touches the floor. It is now on our shelf, and below is what Smirthwaite publishes about it.

What it is and who it suits

The Easi-Lift is an electric changing bench. A wall frame carries the bed, and the bed rises and lowers so the person giving care can work at a height that suits them rather than bending over a fixed surface. Between uses, the whole bench folds up against the wall, leaving the room clear for other things.

Smirthwaite rates it for dry rooms, so think of a changing room, a care suite or a bedroom rather than a shower area. If the bench needs to live where water is running, look at the stretchers further down this post instead. The bench comes in eight sizes with different table lengths and widths, so the choice can follow the person lying on it; a therapist or clinician can advise on size and set-up for the person who will use it.

One planning point: Smirthwaite notes that drywall or stud walls need an extra backing board behind the frame, so check what your wall is made of before the bench arrives.

Key specs

These figures come from Smirthwaite's Easi-Lift Changing Bench page:

  • Height travel: 17.7 to 37.4 in
  • Maximum user weight: 331 lb
  • Table length: 47.2 to 82.7 in, depending on size (eight sizes)
  • Table width: 21.7 in, 23.6 in or 25.6 in
  • Width with the safety rail: 34.4 to 38.4 in
  • Safety side height: 6.5 in
  • Wall frame: 27.6 in wide, 4.3 in deep, 63.8 in high
  • Width when folded against the wall: 12 in
  • Product weight: 176 to 212 lb, depending on size
  • Operation: electric, for dry rooms; white frame finish

Two of those numbers deserve a tape measure. The wall frame stands 63.8 in tall, so you need that much clear wall from the floor up. And the folded width of 12 in tells you how far the bench will sit out from the wall when it is put away, which matters in a narrow room or near a door swing.

What's in the box

Smirthwaite lists three parts: the bed, the safety side and the wall frame. The backing board for drywall or stud walls is not part of the package.

Warranty

Smirthwaite's terms and conditions set out the coverage:

  • Materials and workmanship are covered for 2 years from the date of delivery.
  • Accident, neglect, misuse, not following the instructions and normal wear and tear are excluded.
  • Not following the instructions may invalidate the warranty.
  • For a claim, Smirthwaite Customer Services advises on the next steps.

Keep the user instructions with the bench, since following them is part of keeping that coverage in place.
