Serving without being seen

So much care happens where no one sees it. The early-morning routine before anyone else is awake. The late-night check that everything is all right. The paperwork, the laundry, the patient repetition of the same instructions. The prayers prayed for someone who will never know. If you are a caregiver, or someone who quietly serves others, you may sometimes wonder whether any of it matters. Hebrews answers clearly.

"For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister." (Hebrews 6:10, King James Version)

God does not forget

The writer says it would be unrighteous, unfair, for God to forget your work. That is a strong way of saying He never will. Every act of love you have done in His name is remembered. People may forget. You may forget. God does not.

Labour of love

Notice the phrase "labour of love." Love is not only a feeling; it is work. It means showing up when you are tired. It means lifting, driving, listening, waiting. The Bible honors that kind of work. Caregiving is not a lesser calling. It is a labor of love that God sees and values.

Toward His name

The verse says this love was shown "toward his name" by ministering to the saints, God's people. When you serve someone, you are serving God. Jesus taught that serving others is serving Him, and He modeled it Himself when He knelt to wash His disciples' feet, the humble task no one else wanted.

For those who receive the care

This verse is for people who receive care too. Your prayers for others, your encouragement, your faith in hard places: all of that is ministry, and God remembers it. Many people living with a disability serve in ways the world never notices, and God sees every one of them.

And do minister

The verse ends in the present tense: "and do minister." The writer encourages his readers to keep going. If you are weary, rest is allowed and needed. But do not believe the lie that your quiet service is wasted. It is being written in a book that will not be lost.

Encouragement for today

  • Thank God for one unseen act of love someone did for you.
  • Thank one caregiver or quiet servant you know, specifically and in person.
  • If no one has thanked you lately, hear it from Scripture: your work is not forgotten.
