Seeking first the Kingdom

Jesus spoke these words in the middle of a teaching about worry. He had just pointed to the birds that do not plant or store food, and to the lilies of the field, dressed more beautifully than a king. Do not be anxious about your life, He said, and then He gave His listeners something better to think about.

"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." (Matthew 6:33, King James Version)

The kingdom is for everyone

The kingdom of God is His rule of love and justice breaking into the world through Jesus. It is not reserved for the athletic, the busy or the well-known. In fact, Jesus often pointed to people the world overlooked as the ones who understood the kingdom best. In one of His stories, a great banquet is filled with people others had not thought to invite.

If you live with a disability, you are not on the sidelines of God's work. You have a place at the table and a part to play.

What seeking looks like

Seeking the kingdom does not require a stage or a platform. It can look like:

  • Praying faithfully for your church, your neighbors and the world.
  • Encouraging someone who is struggling, by message, letter or a kind word.
  • Treating the people who help you with patience and gratitude.
  • Sharing honestly how God has met you in hard places.
  • Choosing forgiveness when it would be easier to hold a grudge.

None of these depends on how far you can walk or how much energy you have. All of them are kingdom work.

All these things

Jesus promises that when we seek God first, "all these things," meaning the food, clothing and needs He has just mentioned, will be added. This is not a promise of wealth or of every wish granted. It is a promise that our Father knows what we need and cares about it. We can stop clutching and start trusting.

A different kind of purpose

Many people feel they lose a sense of purpose when their abilities change or they stop working. Jesus offers a purpose that no change in health can take away: to know Him, to love others, and to be part of what He is doing in the world. That purpose is as available from a recliner as from a pulpit.

Seek Him first today, right where you are. He will take care of the rest.
