Patience in the waiting

Waiting is a big part of life for many people with disabilities and their families. Waiting for appointments and test results. Waiting for approvals and paperwork. Waiting for equipment to arrive, for a ride, for a caregiver, for a body to recover from a long day. Waiting can be draining, especially when you cannot see the end of it. Psalm 27 ends with a verse for exactly these seasons.

"Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD." (Psalm 27:14, King James Version)

Waiting on, not just waiting for

David does not just say "wait." He says "wait on the LORD." There is a difference between waiting for something and waiting on someone. Waiting for something can be passive and anxious. Waiting on God means looking to Him, trusting Him, staying near Him while the answer is still coming.

Good courage

It takes courage to wait well. It is tempting to give up hope, or to rush ahead, or to grow bitter. David calls for courage, and then promises that God will strengthen the heart. You do not need to have endless patience in yourself. God supplies the strength to keep going one more day.

Said twice

The verse says "wait on the LORD" twice. Maybe David was reminding himself as much as anyone else. The rest of this psalm shows he had enemies, fears and unanswered prayers. Waiting is something we have to choose again and again.

Earlier in the same psalm, David says the one thing he desires is to dwell in the house of the Lord and to behold His beauty. Waiting on God is not empty time. It can be time spent near Him, getting to know Him better while the answer is still on its way.

Jesus in the waiting

Jesus knew waiting. He spent thirty years in an ordinary town before His public ministry began. He waited in the garden, praying, before His arrest. His friends waited three days after His death before they saw Him risen. God was working in each of those waits, even when no one could see it. He is working in yours too.

Ways to wait well

  • Bring something good to the waiting room: a Psalm to read, a playlist of hymns, a friend to sit with.
  • Tell God honestly how long the wait feels. The Psalms are full of "how long?" prayers.
  • Do the next small thing that is in your hands, and leave what is not in His.
  • Notice and thank the people who wait with you.

The wait may be long. But you are not waiting on nothing. You are waiting on the Lord, who strengthens the heart.
