MegaMotion Rascal Venture 4-Wheel: a four-wheel scooter for the trunk

New this season: the Rascal Venture 4-Wheel from MegaMotion, model RSC49. It is the four-wheel sibling of the Venture 3-Wheel, built on the same idea of a scooter that leaves home with you. MegaMotion's Swift Release Technology lets it separate into five pieces so it fits in a car (MegaMotion: Rascal Venture 4-Wheel).

Who it suits

A four-wheel base suits riders who would rather have a wheel at each corner than the tightest possible turn. If your days include sidewalks, parking lots and store entrances as well as the living room, and you want something that packs into the car for visits and errands, this is the Venture to consider.

The person who loads it matters just as much as the person who rides it. The scooter weighs 81.5 lbs without batteries, or 101.5 lbs with the battery pack in place, and the pack alone is 20 lbs. Because it separates into pieces, no one has to lift the whole thing at once, but it is worth trying a lift of similar weight before you decide.

Key specs

Figures from MegaMotion's specification sheet:

  • Model number: RSC49
  • Weight capacity: 300 lbs.
  • Speed (maximum): 4 mph
  • Range per charge: up to 8 miles at 200 lbs.; up to 6.6 miles at 300 lbs.
  • Turning radius: 46.75 in.
  • Overall length: 40.5 in.
  • Total weight without batteries: 81.5 lbs.
  • Battery pack weight: 20 lbs.
  • Seat: 17 in. wide x 17 in. deep, 22.7 lbs.
  • Maximum rated slope: 6°
  • Maximum obstacle climbing: 2 in.

Living with it

The Venture 4-Wheel rides on four 8-inch solid tires, so flats are not a worry. The tiller angle and the width of the arms both adjust, which helps a rider find a comfortable reach. MegaMotion lists a maximum rated slope of 6° and obstacles up to 2 inches, so treat steep driveways and tall curbs with care and follow the owner's manual.

Range is published two ways: up to 8 miles for a 200 lb rider and up to 6.6 miles at the full 300 lbs. If your usual outing is longer than that, look at a model with a bigger battery. The turning radius is 46.75 inches, wider than the three-wheel Venture, so measure the spot at home where you turn around most often. If that space is tight, the three-wheel version may serve you better indoors, while this one keeps a wheel at every corner for paths and parking lots.
