MegaMotion Carbon Cruiser: a folding chair that lies nearly flat

Made to ride along in the car, the MegaMotion Carbon Cruiser is a folding power chair built around carbon fiber. MegaMotion gives its weight as 42 lbs before the battery goes in, and says it collapses almost flat within seconds, which makes it simple to stow in most vehicles (MegaMotion). Folded, it is just 12.5 inches deep (MegaMotion specifications).

Battery and range

MegaMotion describes the 4 lb lithium battery as airline-compliant (MegaMotion). As always with batteries and flights, check with your airline before you book. Add the battery and the chair weighs 46.4 lbs in all (MegaMotion specifications).

MegaMotion rates it for 300 lbs, with a 3.7 mph top speed and as much as 9.3 miles from a charge (MegaMotion specifications)(MegaMotion). A pair of 24-volt, 250-watt motors move it (MegaMotion specifications).

Seat and controls

You sit 20 inches above the ground on a seat 17.3 inches across and 15.7 deep, with the armrests 9 inches higher (MegaMotion specifications). The joystick and the cup holder that comes with it mount on whichever armrest you like (MegaMotion), so a left-handed driver is covered.

Ride

Both ends of the chair are suspended, there are 2 inches underneath, and MegaMotion's safe-slope limit is 9 degrees (MegaMotion specifications). Open, it takes up 37 by 24 by 38 inches and turns in 31 (MegaMotion specifications). Compare the 24-inch width with your narrowest doorway.

Who it suits

The Carbon Cruiser fits a rider who travels often, drives mostly on smooth floors and pavement, and wants a frame light enough for one person to load. Before you order, set a box of about the folded size in your trunk to be sure it fits with your other luggage.
