Kept in all your ways

Safety is on the mind of anyone who lives with a disability or cares for someone who does. Is the bathroom floor too slippery? Is the path to the car clear? Will the weather make the ramp icy? A lot of love goes into thinking about these things, and that is good. But worry can also grow until it crowds out peace. Psalm 91 offers a wider view.

"For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways." (Psalm 91:11, King James Version)

More care than we can see

This verse tells us that God's care for His people includes help we never notice. Scripture speaks of angels as servants sent to help those who belong to God. We do not need to know exactly how that works to take comfort in it. There is more watching over you than the people in the room.

In all thy ways

The promise is not limited to the safe, easy paths. "All thy ways" includes the days of hospital stays and the days of quiet routine, the familiar routes and the ones you are trying for the first time. Wherever your life is taking you, God's attention goes with you.

A careful word about this psalm

When Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, he quoted the very next lines of this psalm and dared Jesus to throw Himself down from the temple. Jesus refused, answering that we should not put God to the test. So this verse is not a reason to take careless risks. It is a reason to do the sensible things, like clearing a path, choosing equipment that fits, and asking for help, and then to rest in God's care rather than in our own perfect control.

Trusting the Keeper

Caregivers especially can carry the feeling that everything depends on them. It does not. You are one part of God's care for the person you love, and an important one. But you are not the only part, and you are allowed to sleep.

The fullest picture of God keeping His people is Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who said no one can snatch His sheep out of His hand. That is the safest place there is.

For this week

  • Make a short list of safety worries, pray over each one, and then take one practical step on the most important.
  • Thank God for a time you were kept from harm and did not realize it until later.
  • If you are a caregiver, hand the night over to Him before you go to sleep.
