He goes before you

New things are hard even when they are good. A new diagnosis, a new chair, a new house with a ramp at the door, a new routine with a caregiver you have only just met: each one asks you to step into a place you have not been before. Moses knew that feeling well, and near the end of his life he spoke these words to the people of Israel and to Joshua, who was about to lead them somewhere new.

"And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed." (Deuteronomy 31:8, King James Version)

Already there

The promise is not only that God will come along with you. It is that He has gone ahead of you. Whatever waits on the other side of the appointment, the conversation or the move, He is not finding out about it at the same moment you are. He is already there, and He has been preparing the way.

That does not mean every outcome will be the one you hoped for. Israel still faced long journeys and real battles. But they never faced them alone, and neither do you.

Three promises in one sentence

Look again at the verse. He goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Ahead, beside and holding on: there is no direction you can face where God is absent.

For caregivers, this can be a quiet relief. You cannot go ahead of the person you love into every situation. You cannot make sure every nurse is kind, every doorway is wide enough, or every day goes smoothly. God can be where you cannot. You are allowed to do your part and leave the rest with Him.

Fear not, neither be dismayed

The verse ends with a gentle command. It is not a scolding for feeling afraid; it is an invitation to put fear down because of who is walking ahead. Jesus said something similar to His friends the night before the cross, telling them that He was going to prepare a place for them. The One who goes before you has gone all the way through death and come out the other side. There is no road He cannot travel.

Taking the next step

  • Name the "new thing" in front of you right now, and pray about it by name.
  • Ask God to show you one sign that He has gone ahead: a helpful person, an answer that came at the right time, a door that opened.
  • Share the verse with someone facing their own new season.

Whatever comes next, you will not be the first one there. He will.
