Harmar rubber threshold ramp: modular sections for steps up to 4 in

A single raised threshold is small enough to step over without thinking, and big enough to stop a wheelchair, power chair or scooter cold. The Harmar Rubber Threshold Ramp, new on our shelf, is made for exactly those spots.

What it is and who it suits

This is a solid rubber ramp that sits against a threshold or a single low step. Harmar's product page calls it "great for indoor or outdoor use," so it can serve a front door, a sliding patio door or the lip between two rooms.

It may suit you if:

  • The rise you need to cover is no more than 4 in high.
  • You use a wheelchair, power chair or scooter and want a smoother way over the threshold.
  • You want something you can put in place yourself, with no tools.

Weight is rarely a worry with this ramp. Harmar rates it at 850 lb and says "heavy powerchairs and larger scooters are no match" for that capacity.

How the modular sections work

The ramp is built from pieces. Harmar's design adds ½ in sections onto 1 in base sections, and the pieces line up and fit together without tools or hardware. That lets you build the ramp to the height of your threshold. Harmar offers sections from 0 to 1 in up to 3 ½ to 4 in.

The sides are beveled. Harmar says this helps prevent a trip hazard and lets people step on and off from the side, which matters at a busy door.

Sizes

The footprint grows with the height. From Harmar's size table (width x length):

  • 1 in high: 12 in x 39 in
  • 1.5 in high: 18 in x 41 in
  • 2 in high: 24 in x 41 in
  • 2.5 in high: 30 in x 42.5 in
  • 3 in high: 36 in x 44.2 in
  • 3.5 in high: 42 in x 46 in
  • 4 in high: 48 in x 46 in

Every size has a usable ramp width of 36 in.

How to measure

  1. Measure the rise: the height from the floor or ground on the low side to the top of the threshold.
  2. Pick the section whose range includes that number.
  3. Check the space in front of the door. A taller ramp reaches farther out, so make sure it will not block a walkway or the swing of a screen door.
  4. Think about the turn. If the rider has to turn right after the ramp, leave room to do it on a level surface.
