Golden LiteRider 3-wheel: six pieces, no wires to connect

Now on our shelf: the Golden LiteRider 3-wheel, model GL111. Golden calls the LiteRider a full-size portable scooter, and it separates into six pieces without any wiring to unplug (Golden Technologies: LiteRider 3-Wheel).

Who it suits

Golden makes a point of the wiring: there are no cables to unplug between sections. That keeps packing and unpacking simple, especially for someone who does it often or finds small connectors fiddly.

The three-wheel GL111 suits a rider up to 300 lbs who wants a tighter turning radius than its four-wheel sibling. It turns in 39 inches, with a 41.5-inch length and a 22-inch width.

Key specs

Figures from Golden Technologies's product page:

  • Model: GL111
  • User weight capacity: 300 lbs
  • Maximum speed: 5 mph
  • Batteries: 2-22 AH
  • Turning radius: 39"
  • Length: 41.5"
  • Width: 22"
  • Weight of unit (assembled): 125 lbs
  • Front half weight: 44 lbs
  • Rear half weight: 28 lbs
  • Seat with arms weight: 21 lbs
  • Batteries weight: 29 lbs/pack
  • Ground clearance under deck: 3.75"

Loading it

Assembled, it weighs 125 lbs. In pieces, the heaviest is the 44 lb front half; the rear half weighs 28 lbs, the seat with arms 21 lbs and each battery pack 29 lbs. It is a full-size scooter, so take that into account if one person will load it alone.

Build and features

Golden builds the frame from anti-rust steel tubing. Standard equipment covers a Delta tiller, armrests and an LED headlight that both adjust, freewheel mode and electro-mechanical brakes. Freewheel mode lets you push the scooter by hand when it is switched off, useful for moving it around a garage; the owner's manual explains how to use it safely.

Top speed is 5 mph, and the deck clears the ground by 3.75 inches. Golden does not list a range figure for this model in our records, so email us if distance matters and we will tell you what we can confirm. The seat sits 23.5 to 25.5 inches off the ground. An adjustable headlight lets you aim the beam where you need it on an evening ride.

How it compares

Against the four-wheel LiteRider, the three-wheeler turns tighter (39 inches against 48), is a little shorter and has a lighter front half (44 lbs against 52). Both carry 300 lbs and share the seat and batteries. Golden's Buzzaround XL 3-wheel is lighter to lift, with a 32 lb heaviest piece, if the LiteRider's weight is a concern.

The anti-rust frame tubing is a sensible touch for a scooter that will ride in a car and sit in a garage through the seasons.

Before you order

  • Lifting: the front half is 44 lbs and each battery pack 29 lbs.
  • Turning: measure the tightest turn at home against the 39-inch radius.
  • Seat: check the 23.5 to 25.5 inch seat height against the chairs you transfer to.
  • Doorways: check them against the 22-inch width.
