Golden Companion 3-wheel: a full-size scooter for 400 lbs

The Golden Companion 3-wheel (full size) is now on our shelf. Golden designed it as an everyday full-size scooter for larger riders, one that can still be taken apart when it needs to travel (Golden Technologies: Companion 3-Wheel Full Size).

Who it suits

The Companion is rated for 400 lbs and backs that capacity up with suspension front and back and a broad front deck with space for your legs and feet. It suits a rider who uses a scooter every day, for long stretches, and wants it to feel stable and comfortable.

The high-back stadium seat is 18 inches wide and 16 inches deep. It slides and swivels, which helps with getting on and off and with finding the right reach to the tiller. You can set it 23 to 25 inches off the ground.

Batteries and charging

It runs on two U1 batteries, and Golden offers a 50AH option for more range. It charges from a portable 3.5 Amp unit. On the tiller you will find a digital dash that shows battery percentage and a USB port for your phone.

Size and handling

Top speed is 5 mph and ground clearance is 4.5 inches. The scooter is 46 inches long and 24.5 inches wide, turns in 45 inches and weighs 207 lbs assembled. It rides on 9-inch front and 10.75-inch rear tires.

We have not found a range figure that Golden publishes for this model, so if distance is your deciding factor, email us and we will tell you what we can confirm. It comes apart, but it is still a full-size machine, so a vehicle lift is worth considering if you travel often.

How it compares

The full-size Companion 3-wheel sits between the mid-size Companion (350 lbs, 37-inch turning radius) and the Companion HD (500 lbs, 30.5 inches wide). Against the four-wheel Companion, it turns tighter (45 inches against 54) and weighs a little less (207 lbs against 222), while keeping the 400 lb rating and full suspension. If your home is compact, the three-wheeler may be the easier one to live with.
