Golden Buzzaround LX 3-wheel: a 375 lb full-size scooter

New on our shelf: the Golden Buzzaround LX 3-wheel, model GB119. LX stands for Luxury in Golden's naming, and this is a full-size scooter you can still take apart for a trip (Golden Technologies: Buzzaround LX 3-Wheel).

Who it suits

The LX 3-wheel suits a rider up to 375 lbs who wants a comfortable ride and a tighter turn than a four-wheel scooter. Its seat is quilted, folds down and has a high back and armrests; add comfort spring suspension and an easy-reach lever that lets you angle the tiller exactly where your hands want it.

With three wheels it turns in 40.5 inches. Its footprint is 22 inches wide by 45 inches long.

Range

Two U1 batteries give up to 18 miles per charge at up to 5 mph. As with any scooter, hills, cold weather and a heavier load will shorten that, so plan longer outings with a margin. The tires are 9-inch solids at the front and rear, so there are no flats to worry about, and the drive is at the rear.

Loading it

Assembled, the LX weighs 168 lbs. In pieces, the front half is the heaviest at 50 lbs, the rear half 36 lbs, the seat with arms 32 lbs and each battery pack 24 lbs. That is a fair amount of lifting, so it helps to share it between two people.

Seat

The seat, 18 inches wide by 16 deep, has 3 height positions, an inch apart, from 21.75 to 23.75 inches above the ground. A small change in seat height can make getting on and off feel quite different, so try each setting when the scooter arrives.

How it compares

The LX 3-wheel and the Buzzaround EX 3-wheel share the 40.5-inch turning radius, U1 batteries and 18-mile range. The LX is rated for 375 lbs against 350 and has the quilted seat and infinitely adjustable tiller, while the EX is lighter (154 lbs against 168) with a lighter heaviest piece (46 lbs against 50). If you want four wheels with the same comforts, the Buzzaround LX 4-wheel is the match.

An infinitely adjustable tiller is worth trying if you have found other scooters' preset positions never quite right for your arms and shoulders.
