Golden Buzzaround CarryOn HD: a folding scooter rated for 400 lbs

New on our shelf: the Golden Buzzaround CarryOn HD. It is Golden's scooter for travelers, whether the trip is by road, rail, air or sea, and with the seat off it folds flat to under 14 inches tall, compact enough for a car trunk or a hall closet (Golden Technologies: Buzzaround CarryOn HD).

Who it suits

Among the folding scooters on our shelf, the CarryOn HD carries the most: it is rated for 400 lbs. That makes it a natural choice for a larger rider who travels and wants a scooter that folds rather than one that comes apart into many pieces.

For lifting, the main body is the heaviest piece at 52.5 lbs; the seat, with its arms, adds another 20 lbs. Assembled, it weighs 77.5 lbs.

Lithium batteries

The CarryOn HD runs on removable lithium-ion batteries that weigh 5 lbs each. The larger 12.5 AH pack is rated by Golden for 14.2 miles, the smaller 6.5 AH pack for 7.4 miles, and the two together for 21.6 miles. Light batteries are easy to take indoors to charge. If you fly, check your airline's rules for lithium batteries well ahead of the trip.

Comfort and storage

The 16 by 18 inch stadium seat has adjustable armrests. It also carries a cup holder, a holder for a cane, and charging ports in both USB-A and USB-C. When you put it away, a kickstand keeps it standing upright. It tops out at 4.29 mph, clears the ground by 4.63 inches and turns in 48.75 inches.

How it compares

The standard Buzzaround CarryOn is lighter, at 65.5 lbs assembled, and folds to 12 inches high, but it carries 300 lbs. The HD folds to under 14 inches, weighs 77.5 lbs and carries 400. Pride's Go Go Super Portable is lighter still, at 49.9 lbs with its battery, with a 300 lb rating. If capacity is the deciding factor, the HD stands out; if the lightest lift matters most, look at the other two.

The two-battery setup is a practical plus: take the smaller pack for a short outing, the larger for a long one, or both for a big day.
