Feather Chair HD 450: Feather's widest seat, rated to 450 lbs

For larger riders, the choice of wheelchair has often come down to steel frames that are hard to lift and hard to travel with. The Feather Chair HD 450 aims to change that, and it is now on our shelf. Feather Mobility sums up the idea as heavy duty meeting light weight. Here are the details Feather publishes.

What it is and who it suits

This is the larger of the two Feather Chair HD sizes: a 24 inch seat and a rider rating of 450 lbs. Even so, the complete chair weighs 23 lbs. The wheels pop off, leaving a 16 lb frame to lift into a car, and dropping the back makes the package smaller still.

Out back are 24 inch wheels on quick-release axles; up front, 8 inch wheels. Armrests are full length, footrests swing away, and the upholstery is nylon. Feather offers optional anti-tippers and optional elevating leg rests for the HD; our listing offers the chair standard or with quick-release wheels and anti-tippers. If elevating leg rests matter to you, contact us before ordering and we will look into it.

Who is it for? A rider who needs a wide seat and a high weight rating, and who, or whose companion, will be lifting the chair often. It also suits households that travel and want the heavy-duty rating without a heavy-duty lift every time.

Key specs

These figures come from Feather Mobility's product page for the Feather Chair HD, which lists the 22 and 24 inch versions together:

  • Seat width: 24 inches
  • Weight capacity: 450 lbs
  • Chair weight: 23 lbs for the 24 inch seat
  • Weight without wheels: 16 lbs for the 24 inch seat

A word on doorways

A 24 inch seat makes for a wide chair once the wheels are on. Feather's page does not state the overall width, so measure every door the chair needs to pass through, including bathrooms and closets, and email us if you would like us to ask Feather for the exact figure.

What's in the box

According to Feather, the shipment holds:

  • The frame
  • Front and rear wheels
  • Seat upholstery and back upholstery, one of each

The chair comes assembled.

Warranty

Feather's terms, from the Feather Chair HD page:

  • Wearable parts: six months, limited
  • Labor, service visits and shipping for repairs are not covered unless Feather authorizes them.

Getting it in the car

With the wheels removed, the frame is the heaviest piece you will lift. Keep a simple order: rear wheels off, back folded, frame in, wheels in. A blanket in the trunk keeps the frame and wheels from rubbing. If a companion will be loading it regularly, have them try it at home first so they know how it feels.
