Feather Chair HD 350: a 22 inch seat on a 22 lb frame

Heavy-duty wheelchairs have a reputation for being, well, heavy. A sturdy frame for a larger rider can turn every trip in the car into a workout for whoever does the lifting. Feather Mobility's answer is the Feather Chair HD 350, and it is now on our shelf. Here is what Feather publishes.

What it is and who it suits

The HD 350 is the heavy-duty branch of the Feather Chair line. Feather built it for riders who want more room in the seat without giving up a light frame. The seat measures 22 inches across, and the chair is rated for 350 lbs.

The whole chair weighs 22 lbs. Take the wheels off and you are down to 15 lbs, a much lighter piece to raise into a trunk. The back folds down so the chair can be stored or loaded into a vehicle, and folded it stands 28 inches high.

Feather lists fixed and quick-release axles for the large rear wheels, and the armrests run full length. The footrests swing away, and the seat and back are nylon. Our listing is available standard or with quick-release wheels and anti-tippers.

This chair is a good fit for a rider who has outgrown a standard 18 or 20 inch seat, or whose household wants a sturdier chair without the weight of a steel frame.

Key specs

These figures come from Feather Mobility's product page for the Feather Chair HD:

  • Seat width: 22 inches
  • Weight capacity: 350 lbs
  • Chair weight: 22 lbs; 15 lbs without wheels
  • Seat-to-floor height: 19 inches
  • Wheels: 8 inches in front, 24 inches in back
  • Axles: fixed or quick release
  • Armrests: full length
  • Back height: 16 inches
  • Folded height: 28 inches
  • Footrests: swing-away
  • Upholstery: nylon

Feather does not list an overall width for this chair on that page. With the wheels mounted, the chair will be noticeably wider than its 22 inch seat, so measure your doorways and contact us if any of them look tight; we can ask Feather for the figure.

What's in the box

Feather lists the shipment as:

  • The frame
  • The wheels, front and rear
  • One seat upholstery and one back upholstery

Feather says the chair arrives assembled.

Warranty

The Feather Chair HD page gives these terms:

  • Wearable parts: six months, limited
  • Labor, service visits and shipping for repairs are not covered unless Feather authorizes them.

Getting the most from a light frame

The big advantage of this chair is how little it weighs once the wheels are off, so make removing them part of the routine. Pull the rear wheels first, fold the back, then lift the frame into the car and lay the wheels beside it. Unpack in the reverse order. If the chair will mostly stay at home, the light frame still helps: it is easier to move out of the way, lift over a step or store in a closet.
