Feather Chair 20": the wider Feather, rated to 350 lbs

A light chair is only useful if the rider fits comfortably in it. For riders who find an 18 inch seat snug, Feather Mobility offers its folding chair with a 20 inch seat, and the Feather Chair 20" is now on our shelf. This post focuses on what changes with the extra width, using Feather's published figures.

What it is and who it suits

This is the wide-seat member of the Feather Chair family. The design is the same idea as its narrower sibling: large rear wheels that pop off on quick-release axles, a backrest that folds down, and a seat whose middle lifts to close the frame. What changes is the size. The seat grows to 20 inches across, the weight rating rises to 350 lbs, and the chair weighs 20 lbs in total, or 14 lbs once the wheels come off.

On the rider's side, wheel locks are mounted at the front of the frame where they can be reached from the seat. On the companion's side, bicycle-style hand brakes at the push handles help on slopes. The footrests swing aside, and the upholstery is charcoal nylon with blue trim, which makes it easy to tell apart from the orange-trimmed 18 inch chair.

It suits a rider who wants a Feather's light frame but needs more seat room or a higher weight limit than the 18 inch model offers. Our listing is available standard or with quick-release wheels and anti-tippers.

Key specs

These figures come from Feather Mobility's Feather Chair product page, which covers both seat widths:

  • Seat width: 20 inches
  • Seat depth: 16 inches
  • Seat-to-floor height: 19.75 inches
  • Weight capacity: 350 lbs
  • Chair weight: 20 lbs; 14 lbs without wheels
  • Overall: 27 inches wide, 30 inches long, 31 inches high
  • Folded: 15 inches wide, 29 inches deep, 31 inches high
  • Wheels: 6 inches in front, 22 inches in back on quick-release axles
  • Armrest height: 9 inches
  • Back height: 17 inches

Wider seat, wider chair

The extra seat width adds to the overall width too: 27 inches open. Measure your narrowest interior doorway with the door fully open before ordering. The folded width stays at 15 inches, so storage and car loading are much the same as with the smaller chair.

What's in the box

Feather does not list box contents on the page we used.

Warranty

The Feather Chair page lists these terms:

  • Wearable parts: six months, limited
  • Labor, service visits and repair shipping are not covered unless Feather authorizes them.
  • Commercial use is not covered.
  • Work or changes by anyone other than the maker's authorized personnel are not covered.

Before you order

Have the rider sit on a firm, flat chair and measure across the hips at the widest point. If the measurement is close to 18 inches, the extra room of this 20 inch seat may feel better over a long day. If it is well under, the narrower chair may suit. Either way, check the rider's weight against Feather's rating.
