Bruno ASL-700 Chariot: a lift on wheels that suits even sedans

With most hitch lifts, the vehicle carries the lift and the scooter on its hitch alone. The Bruno ASL-700 Chariot, now on our shelf, takes a different approach: it has wheels of its own.

What it is and who it suits

Bruno calls the Chariot "A Lift on Wheels." In its Chariot brochure, Bruno explains that the lift's independent suspension carries the weight of the load, not your vehicle, which is why it can work behind most vehicles, even a small or mid-sized car. Its 360-degree spinning wheels follow the car as you go forward, reverse, turn or parallel park, and Bruno says this makes the Chariot impossible to jack-knife.

Loading is simple. You drive the scooter or power chair onto the self-leveling platform and press a button to raise or lower the lift. Self-tensioning retractable belts, which Bruno says work with one hand, hold the device in place, and an integrated safety latch keeps the platform from lowering by accident. Between trips you fold the traction-coated platform up yourself.

The Chariot could suit you if:

• You drive a sedan and assumed a hitch lift was out of reach. Bruno lists sedans, SUVs and vans.
• Your scooter or power chair is within the capacity and platform size below.
• Your vehicle has a Class I or Class II 1.25 in receiver hitch.

Bruno also notes that you can lower the platform slightly to reach most rear cargo areas, and that the Chariot can be reinstalled on another suitable vehicle later.

Measure your device's width and the distance between its front and rear axles before choosing. Those two numbers decide whether it fits the platform, whatever it weighs.

Warranty

The Chariot comes with Bruno's 3-year limited vehicle lift warranty for the original buyer. Bruno covers all parts for three years after installation, and covers labor by a Bruno Authorized Dealer for the first 30 days after installation. Service and warranty go through the Bruno Authorized Dealer that installed the unit. Consumable items and reasonable wear and tear are excluded.
