Help can feel like something you are always waiting for. Waiting for an appointment, waiting for a part to arrive, waiting for a ride, waiting for someone to be free to lend a hand. When so much of life involves arranging help, a promise about help that is already here can sound almost too good to believe. Psalm 46 makes that promise in its very first line.
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." (Psalm 46:1, King James Version)
Refuge and strength
The psalm uses two pictures. A refuge is a safe place to shelter. Strength is power to keep going. God is both. Some days you need a place to rest and be held; other days you need the energy to face what is in front of you. The same God supplies each, often on the same day.
Very present
The phrase "very present" means near, close at hand, found when needed. God is not a helper you have to book weeks in advance. He does not keep office hours. He is with you at three in the morning when sleep will not come, in the waiting room, and in the quiet after a hard conversation.
The rest of the psalm describes mountains shaking and waters roaring, a whole world in uproar. Yet in the middle of it comes a river that makes glad the city of God, the calm call to be still and know that He is God. His presence does not depend on things calming down first.
Help with a face
Christians believe God's help took on a human face in Jesus, whose name Immanuel means God with us. He knew hunger, weariness and grief. He understands what it is to need help from others; He let friends carry His cross beam and let women provide for Him out of their means. He is not a distant helper but a near one.
Often His help arrives through people: a neighbor who mows the lawn, a friend who drives you to church, a caregiver who knows exactly how you like your coffee. Receiving that help is not weakness. It is one of the ways God shows up.
For today
- When you feel overwhelmed, pray the verse back to God: "You are my refuge and strength, my very present help."
- Look for the help that has already come this week, and thank Him for it.
- If you are able, be someone else's present help in a small way.
